It is one of the most exclusive and magnificent buildings in the world preserved to this day in the history of architecture. The Eastern Roman Empire built two clinics of the same name long before, where Hagia Sophia is located; But they were destroyed for a variety of reasons. Some remains from these 2 churches are located in the garden.
The oldest region of Istanbul was built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian us 1. Hagia Sophia, the most central point of the state, was seen as the most important shrine of the Byzantine empire and Orthodox Christians.
The appearance and dimensions of this unique structure are admirable to everyone who sees it. The emperors held coronations here. Millions of people from all over the world come to Istanbul just to see this place. The hagia sophia church has an area of 7570 square meters and a length of more than 100 meters. The height of the dome is 60 meters and 32 meters in diameter. All surfaces are decorated using sumptuous mosaics except for marble-covered walls. Hagia Sophia, which was used as the Patriarchate Church for 916 years, was converted into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul in 1453. It was the most widely used glass until the last time of the Ottoman Empire. Thus, this very valuable building was also protected.
Damaged by earthquakes in various periods, both the Eastern Roman period and the Ottoman Empire, buttress were built to protect the building. The most extensive repairwas carried out by the Swiss Fossati brothers during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid. It was turned into a museum in 1935 by order of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and opened to local and foreign visitors.
