DISCOVER ISTANBUL

One of the world's great cities, a vast and ever-changing metropolis, Istanbul blends a rich imperial past with an exciting contemporary movement. Istanbul offers a dazzling and endless variety of historical sites and attractions, from which we recommend the following top picks for both first-time and repeat visitors.

Hagia Sophia Mosque and Museum Hagia Sophia: One of the world's leading architectural achievements, was originally built 1400 years ago as the "Church of Holy Wisdom". This magnificent structure is open to visitors in the Istanbul Historical Peninsula, as a testament to Byzantine grandeur.

Sultan Ahmet Mosque: Built between 1609 and 1617 and famous for its six minarets and priceless Iznik tiles, the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, is one of the most magnificent landmarks in Istanbul.

Hippodrome: It was once an important stadium of Constantinople, the capital of the Roman Empire, and is still an important public square today. It is home to the Serpent Column and the Egyptian Obelisk.

Topkapi Palace Museum: This spacious palace, where Ottoman sultans lived for nearly four centuries, is a must-see for all visitors coming to Istanbul for the first time. Topkapi Palace, with its unique collection of ceramics, glass and silverware, weapons and armor, imperial costumes, miniatures and manuscripts, is also famous for its harem quarter, which was the residence of the sultan's wives, concubines and children.

Basilica Cistern: A marvel of Byzantine engineering, this large, cavernous underground cistern was built by the emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD. It is a fascinating place to visit, notable for its inverted Medusa head bases on which the columns stand.

Istanbul Archeology Museum: This neo-classical building, built by the famous Istanbul-born French architect Alexander Vallaury, whose construction started in 1891 and is located within the picturesque Gülhane Park, hosts many marble statues, busts and structures belonging to the rich Greek and Roman heritage of Anatolia.

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum: Built in the 15th century and once the palace of Ibrahim Pasha, the grand vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent, this museum hosts an important collection of calligraphy, tiles and carpets, as well as nomadic Turkish depictions and works.

Suleymaniye Mosque: This mosque, which is the undisputed masterpiece of Mimar Sinan and a rival masterpiece to Hagia Sophia, is the most important mosque in Istanbul, built between 1550 and 1557 in the name of its founder, Suleiman the Magnificent.

Chora Museum: Built in the 11th century, just above the Golden Horn and near the (then) Land Walls of Constantinople, the “Church of St. Savior in Chorai” features interior mosaics and fresco decorations that are considered masterpieces of Byzantine Renaissance art.

Dolmabahçe Palace Museum: This imposing palace, the late home of the Ottoman sultans, has more than 250 rooms and approximately 50 halls. It was built in the mid-1850s and overlooks the coast of the European coast of the city, at the very beginning of the Bosphorus.

Islands: Located a short ferry ride from the mainland, these four inhabited and lush islands offer a welcome break from the hectic pace of the city. Ornate villas and gardens dot the landscape, where the only means of transportation are bicycles and horse-drawn carriages.

SHOPPING

With our advantageous location in the heart of one of Istanbul's most historic districts, we are the perfect starting point for an extensive shopping spree in the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar or Spice Bazaar.

Grand Bazaar: The world's oldest and largest covered market is within walking distance of our hotel. Consisting of 60 streets and nearly 4000 shops (primarily jewellery, carpets and other local artifacts), the Grand Bazaar is a unique experience whether you shop or not.

The Egyptian Bazaar: Located in the nearby Eminönü district and opened in the mid-1st century, Istanbul's second largest covered bazaar is actually part of a complex of buildings, including a mosque. Dried herbs, herbs and countless spices are sold in this colorful and lively market.

Please stay in touch with our Guest Relations department for tips on some of our favorite stores located in locations such as Etiler, Nişantaşı, Beyoğlu, Bağdat Caddesi and luxury shopping malls.
